The town of Andover (Essex County) is in northeastern Massachusetts, approximately 23 miles north of Boston. Situated on the banks of the Merrimack River, Andover is bordered on the north by the cities of Lawrence and Methuen, on the east by the town of North Andover, on the south by the towns of North
Reading and Wilmington, and on the west by the towns of Tewksbury and Dracut.
Andover is known the world over for being the home of one of the oldest and most prestigious college preparatory schools in the U.S. – Phillips Academy. Founded in 1770 by Samuel Phillips.
Andover was originally settled in 1636 as Cochichawicke, this was a Native American name for a local waterway. The community was incorporated in 1646 as the Town of Andover, so named as to honor a town in England where many early settlers hailed from.
Like many New England towns settled along river ways, manufacturing was a major influence in the town’s prosperity. Early development was made possible by harnessing the rivers power and its facilitation for moving goods. The manufacture of paper began in 1789 and in the early nineteenth century several woolen mills prospered. While all of these early forms of manufacturing have since moved away, Andover continues to attract major modern industries.
The river has been replaced by major highways like route 93 that carries thousands of cars through town daily.
The history books make Salem MA notorious for the Witch trials but Andover played its part in one of the darkest periods in colonial history. In 1692 in Joseph Ballard asked for help from girls in the village who were said to have the power to detect and cure disease. The girls, after seeing Mrs. Ballard, claimed that she had bewitched. This accusation set off a frenzy of false accusations that swept Salem Village, Andover and surrounding communities. When it was over more than 40 Andover citizens, mostly women, were accused of being in league with Satan. About a quarter of them were condemned to death; as many as three were executed. Those not condemned were imprisoned for months.
The first woman named in Andover, Martha Carrier, wife of Thomas and a 38-year-old mother of five, was sentenced to die. She was hanged with Proctor and three other men, her body thrown into a shallow, unmarked grave. Martha Carrier was the matriarch of thousands of Carriers in the US. including the founder of Carrier air conditioning.
Martins Flowers and Gifts was founded in 1982 in nearby Georgetown as the dream of Scott Martin who still owns and operates the shop. The Merrimack Valley shop’s philosophy is to provide customers with the freshest and highest quality flowers possible and to design and deliver them with professional and knowledgeable employees.
