Methuen settled in 1642 and was officially incorporated in 1726. It was originally part of Haverhill, Massachusetts, but a petition to form a new town was granted in 1725 by the General Court. The town was named after Sir Paul Methuen, a member of the King's Privy Council. Methuen lies on the northern banks of the Merrimack River.
